Research work

  • Thesis work:

Contribution to understanding central and peripheral cardiovascular systems: modelling and processing macro and microcirculatory signals.

Under the direction of Anne Humeau (LISA), Georges Leftheriotis (Angers Training hospital) and jointly supervised by Stéphanie Bricq (LISA). Thesis started in October 2010 and financed by a grant by the Maine-et-Loire county council.

  • Résumé :

With ageing or pathologies like hypertension and diabetes, the cardiovascular system undergoes alterations. Large calibre vessels (microcirculation) become more rigid and small calibre vessels (macrocirculation) become rarer and/or lose their myogenic tonicity (ability to modify their diameter to regulate blood flow). On the other hand, macrocirculation and microcirculation interact together. So, localised deterioration can have an impact on microcirculation and vice versa. As very few studies have analysed both systems at the same time (macrocirculation and microcirculation), the consequences of modifications linked to vascular pathologies are still poorly defined. In the context of this thesis we thus suggest taking into account the central and peripheral cardiovascular systems at the same time. So the aim of analyses and treatment of synchronised signals is to better understand how aortic rigidity influences micro-circulation or how an attack of the small vessels can have an impact on vessels bigger in diameter. This understanding of macro/micro interactions can help to improve the treatment of cardiovascular pathologies.
We are also considering, to reply to this problem, building a model of the cardiovascular system allowing to the condition of the microcirculation to be "predicted" depending on that of macrocirculation and vice versa.
